Ebook About
From New York Times bestselling author Kate White comes a gripping novel about one woman’s dangerous quest to recover lost memories someone would rather she never find. The key to her missing memories could bring relief—or unlock her worst nightmares. On a cold, rainy morning, finance journalist Ally Linden arrives soaked to the bone at her Manhattan office, only to find that she’s forgotten her keycard. When her boss shows, he’s shocked to see her—because, he explains, she hasn’t worked there in five years.Ally knows her name, but is having trouble coming up with much beyond that, though after a trip to the psychiatric ER, she begins to piece together important facts: she lives on the Upper West Side; she’s now a freelance journalist; she’s married to a terrific man named Hugh. More memories materialize and yet she still can’t recall anything about the previous two days. Diagnosed as having experienced a dissociative state, she starts to wonder if it may have been triggered by something she saw. Could she have witnessed an accident—or worse—had something happened to her? Desperate for answers, Ally tries to track where she spent the missing days, but every detail she unearths points to an explanation that’s increasingly ominous, and it’s clear someone wants to prevent her from learning where those forty-eight hours went. In order to uncover the truth, Ally must dig deep into the secrets of her past—and outsmart the person who seems determined to silence her.

Book Have You Seen Me?: A Novel of Suspense Review :

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS."Have You Seen Me?" is a fine book. Really. I knocked the reading of this book out in one Saturday, so it's fast-paced (at some points) and has a plot that is at least identifiable and has an ending that wraps everything up, even if it is a little lackluster. So where did it go wrong for me? In the novel you have Ally who can't remember a chunk of time in her life and shows up at her old workplace ready for work - only she's told she doesn't work there and hasn't for some time. That was a terrific premise. And then it turned into a woman-on-the-edge thriller that refuses to go there. And I've made my complaints on this known for some time in reviews on mystery and thriller books. Here you have a woman who has amnesia, described differently in the book, and there's all these clues about where she's been and they don't lead up to much. And then there was a dead child she saw when she was a child herself that haunts her and is provided as a suspenseful red herring - did she have something to do with it? Maybe she killed back then? Maybe she killed now - there's bloody tissues in her pocket and she doesn't remember where it came from. But the novel refuses to go there. I didn't really buy for one second that Ally was a killer or involved in any kind of crime, mostly because she seemed too befuddled about everything- so much so I wondered how she ever became so successful because she didn't seem to have anything together. And part of the problem, as in most novels, is characters just not telling each other what's happening (see Ally's husband). What I wanted to happen was for Ally to be a killer as a character. I wanted the stakes much, much higher. I wanted to think her husband was involved in her amnesia (it's hinted at, but only briefly) or her idiotic intern Sasha was killing people around her to get ahead (and Ally had found out and was her victim). When you find out what everything is all about, it is out of nowhere and while a good twist, it's an imperfect one. It should have been Ally at the center of it all. She should've blacked out more. The body she discovered as a child should've been tied to her more than just Ally being a witness. Then the book might've entered Tara French territory, but no need for all the drawn-out scenes like those novels. Kate White knows how to tell a story, that's not the problem here.I think it was just not the story I wanted. And is that the author's problem or mine? I guess it depends on other readers reactions. But, really, I think the premise got away because the author wanted us to root for Ally, and I don't think readers will. We have no connection to her other than wanting to figure out the mystery, too, and after a while we want the answers. And for waiting so long, we want the focus of the mystery to be her character.I think for most authors that would mean giving the audience what they expect, but the premise would have made it less expected. And when it comes to that fear of "giving the expected story", raise the stakes higher. Make it about money, her husband and the possibility of an affair and he was taking the money from her old company, her brother and they're all involved trying to make her look crazy but little do they know she's a killer and has the past to prove it, but that's what her brother was counting on but it backfired and now she's out to kill everyone but blacks out after doing so.Blah, blah, blah, right? That's the novel I wanted. It wasn't what I got. And again - author's problem or mine?I wouldn't discourage you from reading it, but it might not be what you're expecting.
Imagine showing up to work in an office you haven't been to for 5 years. Then discovering you've 'missing' for 2 whole days and you have no memories of the time. Otherwise healthy, who can you trust? Ally Linden finds herself in the office of a former coworker (and lover) who is extremely surprised to see her - she has no purse or phone and appears disheveled. Then she passes out.Waking up in the hospital, pieces of her life come back, but not anything from the past 2 days. She know she needs help to rebuild her memories, but who can she trust? Her best friend, her husband, her therapist, her brother AND the ex-boyfriend all have differing perspectives on the 2 days and she even hires a private investigator. Along the way, she remembers something from her past that she's afraid has implications in a cold case murder, but what set off the memories? This stand-alone psychological thriller is another great book by Kate White. I highly recommend it!
